You'll find that there are two main kinds of contrast. You have to find a way to make your basic topic different from your opponent's. While you may want to point out a weakness of theirs, it's important to remember that they will want to point out something that's really not a weakness. It's important to point out a flaw or a reason for your position. You might want to end up being the one who explains things for them; that way you aren't totally shutting them out.

The other type of contrast that you can use is to make the thing that you're supporting very obvious. You want to stand out and make the audience aware of what you're talking about. Once you've explained that you believe it, it's time to find the pieces of evidence that support your position. You might find yourself relying on emotion, but even in those cases you have to use fact. Just having facts backing your position isn't enough.

A persuasive opinion is a powerful speech. Don't just write a simple speech, write one that will inspire and convince. Make sure that you lay out your arguments and explain how you arrived at them. Then put them in the right context and you have a great reason to get the people who listen to your speech and turn out to vote for you.
